All the clothes and accessories that went out of fashion in 2021

  • Insider spoke with stylists about what fashion trends they think have gone out of fashion this year.
  • ’90s-inspired trends, like bucket hats and checkerboard prints, are fading out.
  • Chunky sneakers are out and slimmer shoes are back again.

Fashion runs in cycles, and certain trends from the past few years have already begun to fade.

Insider asked professional designers what trendy items won’t be a constant in 2022.

From a basic black dress to high-heeled shoes, here are the clothes and accessories you should consider ditching next year:

Plain leggings will be replaced by new ones

Personal stylist and fashion designer Lana Blanc told Insider that regular leggings will be outdone by more interesting stretchy leggings in 2022.

“Normal leggings are getting worse,” she said. “If you’re heading to brunch instead of yoga, I recommend choosing a t-shirt or split leggings instead.”

Instead of tossing your regular leggings on, you may want to stow them into your workout wardrobe or loungewear drawer.

People are not quite ready to go back to wearing daggers

With many people still spending more time at home, it should come as no surprise that high heels won’t be popular in 2022.

“After more than a year of wearing underwear indoors and out, high heels still aren’t ready for a comeback in 2022,” Blanc told Insider.

She recommended chelsea boots, platform shoes and block heels as stylish and comfortable alternatives to high heels.

Full baggy clothes are waning in popularity

Fashion designer and model Tara Dupuis told Insider that baggy and oversized outfits from 2021 will give way to more custom designs in 2022.

“As many of us start spending more time outside the home again, the trend toward loose-fitting, first-person clothing will be replaced by more structured and fitted shapes,” she said.

If you’re not quite ready to ditch your comfy clothes, pairing loose-fitting items with well-fitting clothing (like wide-legged pants with a body scrub jacket) can be balanced and elegant.

But skinny jeans on the outside and wider cuts on the inside

Plank described skinny jeans as the number one item in your wardrobe for 2021.

“Tight jeans are definitely dead,” she said. “But on the bright side, there is now a wide variety of looser denim styles to choose from.”

If you’re looking to transition to a different cut, Blanc suggested trying a straight leg before diving in toward the wide leg.

Maybe it’s time to replace your small bag with a real wallet

Mini bags — small bags that can only hold a cell phone or a set of keys — had a fashionable moment in 2021, but that trend is fading.

“People are finally tired of these impractical bags, and I’m happy to see this trend die,” Blanc said. “Invest in an actual handbag that can hold your personal belongings.”

There is a difference between a briefcase and a small purse, so don’t be afraid to keep things to a minimum while choosing something that can accommodate all your essentials.

Cold shoulder tops are already dated

Tops with shoulder openings lose steam for newer styles.

“While these are still a favorite of many women, this trend has been around for a while and I’m simply starting to feel a little tired,” Dupuy said.

Instead of flaunting your shoulders, the designer recommended choosing tops with other fun arm details, like puffed sleeves or cuffs.

Replace uncomfortable jackets with easier layering

Personal stylist Lee Williams told Insider that people understand that jackets — the knitted pieces that cover the arms and shoulders — are hard to wear.

“People are realizing that this technique can be restrictive and really limit the movement of your arms,” she said. “We now see slouchy woolen jackets more than bulletproof vests.”

For a lighter top layer, you can also opt for an oversized shawl or scarf.

Consider replacing your bulky sneakers with slimmer styles

Chunky sneakers have been hugely popular on the catwalks and Instagram, but the “sneaker for dad” trend may finally be on the way.

“I’ve never been wild about this shoe trend, so I’m glad thicker sneakers are now being replaced by sleeker mules or sleeker leather sneakers in 2022,” Dupuy told Insider.

If you miss athletic shoe support, try incorporating an orthopedic accessory into your slimmer shoe collection to get the best of both worlds.

Bike shorts are a must always move into your workout wardrobe

The stretch bike shorts will be officially considered sportswear again.

“Now that we’re dressing for work, dinner, and occasions again, the trend toward biker shorts as everyday wear is definitely on the decline,” Dupuy said.

She suggested finding an easy-to-wear and more stylish alternative such as paper bag shorts or pants.

Tie-dyed clothes can be replaced with more patterns than adults

One of the most popular DIY fashion trends in 2021 has been tie-dye. But this fad may fade in favor of more polished, colorful items.

“The tie-dye trend was young and fun, but that style was really getting phased out as we started getting back in the business and being in more formal settings again,” Dupuy told Insider.

But there is no need to drain color from your wardrobe. Choose items that are forbidden or decorated in bright colors to keep the fun going.

Retro bucket hats are on their way out again

The early 2000s saw the return of bucket hats, a staple of ’90s fashion. But this trend began to fade into the history of fashion again.

“The reality is that bucket hats can look overly casual or even silly,” Williams said. “In 2022, you’d better wear a classic baseball cap if you want to accessorize with hats.”

Knit berets paired with oversized buttons can give you a casual, cold-weather look with vibes.

Skip the chessboard prints in 2022

Bold checkerboard prints can be eye-catching, but Williams said she’s happy to leave this striking trend in 2021.

“Chessboard prints are visually disturbing and difficult to wear in real-life situations like work or dates,” she told Insider. “Now that we spend less time at home, this print trend is on the wane.”

If you still like the look, try adding it to your look in small doses, such as a checkerboard scarf or a muted handbag.
