The ‘special’ Golden Globes prove what we’ve long suspected: It’s not about the awards, it’s about the red carpet and the clothes

No red carpet, no worries? barely. The Golden Globes special, which took place at the Hilton Beverly Hills, was not broadcast.

Instead, it’s shortened to a live blog on the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) website with the winners announced on social media.

Gone are the glitz and glamor – instead, the HFPA website automatically updated every now and then, and there was also a manual function where you could tap and update independently, to speed things up a bit.

It was a fantastic night for the Australians who won in every category in which they were nominated. And actress Nicole Kidman admitted her victory by posting Instagram Stories. Adelaide-born Cody Smit McVeigh did the same, posting a video of his dad congratulating him on his victory.

But we’ve been robbed of seeing them walk the red carpet earlier. So, for those with red carpet withdrawal symptoms, we’ve got you covered. Here are some classic looks from years past on the Golden Globes red carpet.

Because if the private, non-televised ceremony has proven one thing, it’s what we’ve long suspected: The Golden Globes aren’t about the awards—it’s about the costumes we get, uh, and…oh about.

Best Actor in a Motion Drama, Australian actor Joel Edgerton has arrived at the 74th Annual Golden Globe Awards.

We’re in this position because the HFPA came under fire after an investigation in the Los Angeles Times exposed ethical loopholes and a lack of diversity in the organization, which didn’t have a single black journalist in its 87-member group. Studios and PR firms threatened to boycott the awards, as some listeners condemned the group on social media.

The HFPA says it has reconstituted itself, adding a chief diversity officer, and included 21 new members, including six black journalists, with the NAACP brought in in a five-year partnership.

But the Globes’ long-time broadcasting partner, NBC, announced that it would not be broadcasting the 2022 Golden Globes because “changing this scale takes time and work.”

So instead of the 79th Golden Globes attracting 18 million TV viewers, she had to make do with live updates on Twitter.

The only stars to appear were Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jamie Lee Curtis, who appeared in video messages about HFPA’s charitable work, in which Schwarzenegger thanked the group for their appreciation of him in the 1970s.

So, we’re retro too, with these red carpet looks from the past.
